How Clinton County handles foreclosure
DeWitt sits just north of Lansing, across the Clinton County line, and Clinton County handles foreclosure differently from its neighbors. For unpaid property taxes, it has the State of Michigan act as the foreclosing unit, while Ingham and Eaton counties foreclose through their own treasurers.
For mortgage foreclosures, the Clinton County sheriff holds sales on Wednesday mornings at the courthouse in St. Johns. After a sheriff sale there is usually a redemption period, and Dave buys during that period too.
If you are behind on a DeWitt house, talk to your lender and a free HUD-approved housing counselor first. If selling is the better path, Dave closes on your timeline. Our guide to stopping foreclosure in Michigan covers each stage.

Where Clinton County began
DeWitt is named for DeWitt Clinton, the New York governor, and was first settled by Captain David Scott in 1833. DeWitt Township once covered the whole county and was split into today’s townships between 1837 and 1841, and the county seat stayed in DeWitt Township until it moved to St. Johns in December 1857. A fire in October 1930 destroyed eight downtown buildings, including the Clinton House hotel, but homebuilding kept going, and DeWitt grew into the bedroom community it is today. It became a city in 1965. Capital Region International Airport is in the township.
The first township meeting was held at Captain Scott’s house on April 8, 1836. The Lansing, St. Johns and St. Louis Railway brought new business in the early 1900s, and DeWitt became a village in 1929. The city lies north of I-69 and west of US-127 on the Looking Glass River, a tributary of the Grand. DeWitt Public Schools runs Schavey Road and Scott elementary schools, Herbison Woods School, DeWitt Middle School and DeWitt High School, and the township became a charter township in 1978. The area is also home to gymnast Jordyn Wieber, part of the gold medal team at the 2012 London Olympics.
DeWitt files in St. Johns
The Clinton County offices for a DeWitt house are in St. Johns. Some land in DeWitt Township near Lansing and East Lansing is served by those cities under 425 agreements, so check your tax bill to see who taxes your house.
The agreements are specific. East Lansing provides services to about 1,200 acres of the township under agreements from 1998 and 2001, in exchange for 32 percent of that land’s property taxes, and in 2011 the township signed one with Lansing for about 2,000 acres around the airport. School lines cross the township too: most homes are in the DeWitt, Bath or Lansing districts, and some parcels are in St. Johns or East Lansing.
