The county seat that almost became the capital
Charles Noble founded Mason in 1836, hoping the new state would put its capital there. In 1847 the state chose Lansing Township instead, and Noble made Mason the county seat. When Lansing tried to take that title in 1877, the two cities agreed to move some county offices and courts to Lansing while Mason stayed the seat, which is why Michigan’s capital is not a county seat. The arrangement still shows when you sell: an Ingham County estate is filed in Lansing, while the deed is recorded in Mason. Mason is also home to the headquarters of Dart Container, and CATA runs weekday buses from downtown Lansing.
Mason sits on the Mason Esker, one of the longest eskers in the western hemisphere, and Sycamore Creek flows through town. Its early economy ran on sawmills, carriage and cart factories, a steam flour mill and even a buffalo robe maker. It became a village in 1865 and a city in 1875; the county’s first downtown courthouse went up in 1843 and was replaced in 1858. Wyeth once made baby formula here, a line that ended in the 1990s. US-127 and M-36 serve the city, Jewett Field lies to the southeast, and cattle still graze inside the city limits.

The Ingham County Register of Deeds and Treasurer are both at 341 S. Jefferson St. in Mason. The county Probate Court takes filings at the Veterans Memorial Courthouse in downtown Lansing, and one of its judges hears cases at the historic courthouse in Mason.
