An inherited house in the Stockbridge countryside

Stockbridge Township was the first township organized in Ingham County, in 1836, and the village has been its center ever since. The Lakelands Trail State Park starts in the village and runs 26 miles east.

Rural houses like the ones around Stockbridge are often passed down in families. When the heirs live elsewhere, an empty country house can sit for months while someone works out probate, the cleanout and the repairs.

Dave helps with the probate process from start to finish and handles the cleanout and trash removal, so the family does not have to empty the house before it sells. See selling an inherited house.

A small village in a large township

The village is about 26 miles southeast of Lansing in a straight line. M-52 runs north and south through its center, M-106 runs with it through town, and M-36 crosses the township’s northeast corner. The Stockbridge 49285 ZIP code covers most of the township. David Rogers, the first resident, settled here in 1834, and the township hall, built in the village in 1892, is on the National Register of Historic Places. The 2020 census counted 3,912 residents in the township, about 1,200 of them in the village.

The village covers about one and a half square miles in the southeast corner of the township, which spans nearly 36 square miles, less than half a square mile of it water. The township hall was listed on the National Register in 1980 and named a Michigan State Historic Site in 1987, and the Capital Area District Library runs a Stockbridge branch. M-36 forms a short stretch of the township’s northern boundary.

Stockbridge is far from its county offices

Stockbridge is in Ingham County but a long way from the county offices: probate cases are filed at the Veterans Memorial Courthouse in Lansing, and deeds and back taxes are handled in Mason. For an owner behind on taxes, the county treasurer puts its timeline at about 25 months from delinquency to foreclosure, and you can call that office for an exact payoff.

Rents here are among the lowest of any area on this site: the Census puts the median at $777 a month across the township and $767 in the village. If you own a Stockbridge rental and the rent no longer covers the upkeep, Dave buys tenant-occupied houses as-is. If you live out of state, a sale to Dave needs no showings, and a local title company handles the closing.
